Functionality

What is a friction damper? How is the damper built and what forces are acting? We present the most important characteristics of the SUSPA friction dampers to you here.

  • What is a friction damper?

Friction dampers are damping elements that convert the kinetic energy of moving components into thermal energy, thus reducing hard stops or avoiding excessively large vibration amplitudes.

  • Structure of a damper

Friction dampers essentially consist of a housing, a tappet, and a friction element that acts like a connecting member. The damping or friction force is generated by the friction element due to the relative movement between the housing and tappet.

  • Friction forces

The friction or damping force can be controlled via the friction element.

  • Characteristic curve of the damper

Different characteristics are available for friction dampers. These range from linear force progression to soft start to spring-supported characteristic curves. In this way, we are able to create the ideal damper from our modular system for the respective application. The friction forces are temperature and speed-dependent

  • Additional advantages

    • Environmentally friendly
    • Low weight
    • Long service life
